What a wrap up to this years Melbourne show with the running of the 80 th Garryowen. Shae Hanger (a great grand niece of Violet Murrel) and her mount Chosen One wrote there name in the history book for a second time today winning the prestigious event by six points over second place getter Stephanie Barrington riding SLM Orlando with Rose McEvoy and HB Beautiful Encounter in third ,in fourth was DP Amazing ridden by Heidi Pickstock, fifth was The Russian ridden by Kristin White and in sixth place Montilla ridden by Penny Ahern. All competitors this year received a beautiful violet coloured sash to commemorate Violet’s death while trying to save her favourite hack Garryowen in a tragic barn fire.

The day also held other turnout classes including the John Lithgow Equestrienne Turnout won by Stephanie Barrington riding SLM Orlando . The Esquire Equestrienne Turnout won by Kathleen Mullan and Kolbeach Roulette and the K.G. Luke Equestrian Turnout was won by High Fashion ridden by Syenna Vasilopoulos.

In the Pope Cup Joh Bailey & Michael Christies Mikimoto worked the house down to claim the honor of that title in what was trying conditions at times with all the normal distractions of a royal show plus a touch of rain and wind. Mikimoto also went on to win the Picasso Trophy.

In the hack championship Kathleen Mullan rode her hack Kolbeach Roulette to take the bow, much to the surprise of Kathleen who seemed to think it was a dream, what a nice way to finish a dream show ,three best novice awards ,the Esquire Equestrienne Turnout and Champion Hack! Reserve champion hack was SLM Orlando and Stephanie Barrington who, in her own words describes Orlando “as still a baby” but I am sure they have a bright future ahead of them.
