No matter if you are a novice or a seasoned performer all the hard work you put in to condition and fine tune your horse with work, brushing, rugs and feeding can all be undone with bad presentation.
Presenting feet can be a difficult one, if you show saddle horses it’s easy to put on a bit of hoof black and be done with it! When you show breeds it is a bit harder as a lot of breeds like Welsh, Arabians and other Native breeds do not allow or like hoof black so what can you do to present and keep a ‘natural’ hoof in show condition, follow our 3 easy steps!
It helps to start with a well-trimmed or shod hoof. when you are washing your equine for the show or event make sure to give their feet a good scrub with a stiff brush to remove any baked in dirt and marks.
What you will need:
- Chux or a soft cloth
- Sand paper
- Clear shoe polish for white feet
- Black shoe polish for black feet
- Brown shoe polish for brown feet.
- A good quality clear hoof polish
After you have scrubbed your horses’ hooves and they are completely dry, use the sand paper to clean off any ingrained dirt and smooth rough surface.
Use the a cloth to apply the appropriate colored polish to your horses hooves. To do this apply a small amount to the cloth and rub in a small circular motion till color is applied to the entire hoof.
Wipe off any excess polish and apply the clear hoof polish.
Like all hoof polishes they will not last all day so when they start to fade apply more hoof polish or if you are ring side a shiny spray like Ultra can also be used.
So now you know how to get a great looking natural Show Hooves
